Happy second day of summer! Finally, it’s officially the start of a new season full of pool days, late nights, and vacations! Beautiful weather always puts everyone in a great mood, and cute summer clothes doesn’t hurt either. Lately, gingham has been everywhere and I wanted to experience what the hype was about. Yes, it’s a cute print and perfectly resembles that of a picnic tablecloth. Although, why does everyone love it so much? After picking up a couple pieces of gingham myself, I have finally found the solution! Gingham is the new summer neutral!
Now you are probably thinking that I’m crazy. Yes, I realize that it is in fact a print, so how can it be a neutral? If you break down gingham though, it’s really just a series of stripes layered over top of each other. When you think of a subtle print that can work as a neutral, what do you think of? Stripes! We found the trail! Basically, gingham is just another alternative to a stripe. This is why everyone loves it so much. Not only is it cute and festive for summer, but it can be considered a print and a neutral all at once!
[ezcol_1half][/ezcol_1half] [ezcol_1half_end][/ezcol_1half_end]I must admit, I came up with this look by total accident. It was a shoot day obviously, and I had no idea what I wanted to showcase. I started pulling out new pieces that I had, and this ASOS top was the first thing I grabbed. I laid it on my bed so I could better visualize what it was going to look like with other pieces. Returning to my rack of clothing, my styling gears were turning and I had already forgotten that I had laid out this gingham top. These Old Navy, floral printed shorts were just screaming my name, so I did the exact same thing and laid them on my bed to start pairing an outfit around. Low and behold, this method of accidental styling created an organically cute, summer look (if I do say so myself)!
[ezcol_1half][/ezcol_1half] [ezcol_1half_end][/ezcol_1half_end]The key to pairing these loud prints together is the gingham print! Because the stripes are smaller and closer together, this really tones down the print. I’m not really sure how well this top would look with these shorts, if the stripes were larger and further apart. When you shop for gingham, try to aim for the smaller and closer together stripes. It will save you in the long run. Plus, it’s much more flattering to every figure.
Another reason this mixing of prints works, is because of the monochromatic color scheme. You know how much I love a good monochromatic look. It’s my secret weapon. With this ASOS, gingham top and Old Navy shorts both being red, they almost look like a two-piece set. Almost. Having a monochromatic outfit can be your saving grace to mixing and matching prints. The next time you want to try it out, just look for prints with the same colors and see how they look together.

After styling this gingham top, I understand why it’s such a loved print. No matter what article of clothing it’s on, it’s multi purposed. It can serve as a print, or as a neutral. It can be the key to making the art of mixing prints easy. With all of these uses it provides, gingham really has become the print of the season. What’s your favorite way to wear it? Do you like to mix it with other prints as well, or do you like it to be the focal point of your look?

Such fun pattern mixing, friend! I really love the red tones on you. That gingham top by itself is also absolutely adorable – I’ve only recently gotten into this print, and now I can’t stop won’t stop! It’s just so quintessentially summer!
You look adorable in this gingham neutral and floral shorts! And that clutch is so cute. I must confess, that i’ve yet to purchase a gingham top. I was going to let that trend go, but you’ve got me tempted. š Thank you for linking up with the Thursday Moda.
I love the tie front detail on your gingham top, and it looks great with the floral shorts. Such a fun way to mix patterns, and I’ll have to try this with my gingham tops!

Hahaha I love the title of your post! I’ve been asking the same question – don’t get me wrong it’s super cute but I’ve been seeing everyone wear this trend. I finally recently got myself a gingham top and can’t wait to style. I love the little tie detail on you.
