6 Core Pieces to Mix and Match with Every Outfit

It’s about that time for some of you to be shopping for back-to-school clothes, and quite frankly I wish I was joining you. Not so much high school, but I would do anything to go back in time and start my undergrad over. I was always that girl that packed anything and everything to take to college, and at times I kind of regretted it. In fact, I was mocked by my friends for how many clothes I took to school with me.

If I could do it over again, I would 100% include more core pieces to mix and match. It’s just so much more logical, and it really exercises your styling and creativity skills more. In most cases, the more restrictions I have, the more creative I get. Needless to say, I’m so excited to be partnering with Old Navy for this post to redeem my college closet decisions! I’m sharing my top 6 core pieces to mix and match with every outfit in your school wardrobe.

The Maxi Dress

Not going to lie, but I have a weakness with mustard yellow – if you don’t already know that. Long story short, this maxi had to be mine. I mean, you have to start the school year off with a bang! To be honest, you need to start off every day with a bright and colorful bang. You’ve got to manifest those positive vibes, am I right? Not only can you wear this maxi dress and not have to worry about your dress being too short, but it’s just long enough for you to wear with sneakers as well! Believe me, for all my shorties out there. I’m 5’3′ and it’s the perfect length.

Not only can you throw on a cute denim/faux leather jacket over it for once it gets colder, but there’s so many other creative ways to get the most use out to it. Mixing and matching it with a graphic tee, would create the cutest retro vibes. Styling a chunky knit sweater over it would bring on all the fall feels. The possibilities are endless!

The Classic Stripe Tee

Stripes are the ultimate base to mix and match different prints. It’s my personal secret weapon for styling prints. I like to think of them as both a neutral and a print. Because of their symmetry, it makes them so easy to pair with everything. Plus, they give off so many retro vibes! My usual go-to is the tucked-in-tee trend. I think it makes me look so much chicer than I really am. That’s the ultimate goal isn’t it?

The Everday Denim

If you’ve been around my Instagram, then you know that I wear my Old Navy high-waist flared denim jeans in almost every picture. Needless to say, their jeans and I are in a committed relationship. Although, I wanted to try out something a little different than the flares. When I came across the 24/7 Rockstar denim, I knew this is exactly what I was looking for. Because they are so stretchy (perfect for my past gymnast legs), I wear them about as much as my signature flares.

To spice things up this school year, I’d try out some camo jeans. I’ve been seeing them styled left and right, and I know they are going to be a huge hit this fall. The key to styling them is the same concept behind styling stripes. It’s essentially another print/neutral combo, which makes them perfect to match with floral tops, or your staple denim on denim looks.

The Floral Feminine Top

You know those days when you are running late, but still want to look cute? You need something that makes a cute statement but goes with everything – your girl doesn’t have time to try on her whole closet. You need that go to feminine top that comes in clutch every time. Whether you are going to a football game, or catching some lunch in between classes, floral is the way to go. Whatever season, floral prints always seem to remain timeless. My favorite way to style the print is to get creative with some camo pants. Although, some killer denim would be the perfect everyday option.

The Denim Jacket and Chambray Shirt

When in doubt, my solution will always be denim – and even more denim. Because of its versatility, it makes for the ultimate canvas to spark creativity. I’m always in favor of the denim on denim look, but everyone needs that go-to denim jacket that never fails them. For a lighter more suitable layering piece, chambray shirts are the perfect substitute.

The limit does not exist to the styling opportunities. I hope this helped you narrow down the pieces you still need to complete your back-to-school wardrobe or shined some light on how to style your summer pieces for the beginning of fall.
