Now I know the military trend has been around for awhile. We all tried and loved the camo deal, which is still on point (don’t get me wrong). As for the rest of this season and into the spring, the trend is about to get a facelift. Instead of seeing the famous print, the trend is channeling more towards structure and detailing. From the boxy shapes to the oversize cargo pockets, the utilitarian movement is amping up it’s game.
Another major element to the trend is the color focus. Instead of it being fun and boisterous, now it’s going to be more simple and minimalistic. You will be seeing much more khaki, hunter green, and navy incorporated into this utilitarian trend. With the color theory being much more subdued and clean, this leaves more attention for the construction and the detailing. For example, the jacket I’m wearing is a dark grey knit. This allows for the jacket to look more sleek and chic, while the silhouette and the double breasted detailing can do most of the talking.
To keep the polished look going, I wanted to add a little more of the structural element to the look. I paired my jacket with this asymmetrical cowl-neck sweater to bring in a more modern feel. Although, my outfit is looking pretty dressed up right now. If you have been around for awhile, you’ll notice that I tend to mix casual and dressed up elements a lot. I figured this was the perfect opportunity to really show of the silhouette of the outfit, so I added my high-waisted, cropped ASOS jeans. I’m sorry you see these pants so often, but they have earned the coveted title of “Bryanna’s #1 Pair of Jeans”. Plus the light wash really contrasts with the rest of the dark pieces.
Not to be repetitive, but we have to keep this structure and detail theme going! As for my shoes, the lace-up, Saks Off 5th flats were just the perfect way to tie up the rest of the outfit (literally). Like I said before, the light wash jeans really allow them to pop and show off their detailing. As for the hat, I was really feeling this androgynous vibe. The feather really adds a retro touch, which perfectly complements the jacket. For the finishing touches, I threw on some gunmetal Ray Bans and added a pop of rustic, red to my lips.
I’m not going to lie you all, I’m super pumped about this structural shift to the utilitarian trend. I think it adds the perfect pop to this dreary weather that’s going on. I hope you try out this trend and incorporate your own twist. If you’re interested, I’ve linked a bunch of my favorite military/utilitarian jackets down below that pull of this structural theme so well. Let me know if you decide to participate in the trend!

I definitely agree with the way the trend is going! Really like how you styled this- especially with the lace up flats. I think I have those π
I’m loving this upgrade! I really like the idea of more of a focus on structure and detail – which is totally this coat. Such a fun way to play with a neutral color.

That’s exactly what I experienced during Fashion Week in London! And I’m glad to see someone actually taking the utilitarian trend and actually making it into street fashion. Love the way you styled this! π
