Mixing prints can be tricky business sometimes. There is already so much going on in one print and pairing multiple prints together can get overwhelming. Where does one start? How do you know if you are going overboard and looking like a walking explosion? The thing with that is there really isn’t an exact science. Most of it is simply accomplished through trial and error, but that can sometimes take a long time to come up with something acceptable. The easiest and quickest solution I have come up with is to have a base.
Now I’m sure you are probably wondering exactly what I mean by that. Basically it’s a piece of the outfit that keeps the whole look cohesive. It’s something you can work your whole outfit around; a starting point if you will. Finding a base can be accomplished in three different ways:
- Establishing a color scheme
- Adding a piece with a simple pattern, such as stripes or polka dots
- Infusing a print with a neutral shade
Any combination of these three bases can work as a guideline to combining prints. As you can probably tell, I demonstrated options two and three, which was adding a piece with a simple pattern and infusing a print with a neutral shade. I promise you, the math adds up. If you doubt me, try it out for yourself.
Now why would someone take the plunge in combining prints? Well first of all it add an interest twist to your look. It’s unique to everything else that everyone is wearing, because it has your flavor saturated into outfit. Not only does it set you apart, but it allows you to practice your styling techniques. Don’t get me wrong, combining prints is kinda tough. That’s what makes it fun though, because it’s a challenge. Once you come up with an outfit that works, you will feel so much more accomplished and creative with your life. What an awesome way to start your day?!
