The Most Valuable 70s Trends To Incorporate This Holiday Season

IMG_9897_

As you probably have noticed, 70s vibes has been all over the fashion radar this year. Furthermore, it’s one of the most revisited decades when it comes to fashion. With how intense the media world is and the simplicity of the era, the past couple of months I’ve been really drawn to it. With that being said, it got me thinking on just how influential those 10 years were. Many different styles and creativity outlets were born, and its legacy continues on. As we move into the holiday season, I wanted to pay a tribute back to the iconic era. Today, I’m sharing the most valuable 70s trends to incorporate into your wardrobe this holiday season!

1. Bell Bottoms + Flared Denim

From bell bottoms to flared denim, these are two of the most iconic trends of the 70s. Not only do they has a festive flare to the bottom of your pants, but they actually give the illusion of longer legs. While high-waisted pants were the style, this allows for your legs to look a mile long. The flare at the bottom helps further continue one the length of your legs. With that being said, have a little bit of fun with your holiday wardrobe. Incorporate some festive bell bottoms or flared pants into your everyday mix.

2. Jumpsuits

All I have to say, is thank God for jumpsuits. All I want to wear lately is jumpsuits. Not only does it make getting dressed a since, but it instantly makes a statement. If someone is wearing a jumpsuit, you know it. They leave such an impactful memory, and I think that makes them that much more special for the holiday season. Instead of sticking to a holiday dress this year, maybe step it up a notch and go for a jumpsuit instead!

IMG_9841_ IMG_9850_ IMG_9914_3. Crochet + Macramé

To give the ultimate throwback, I believe that crocheted and macraméd pieces give the best affect. Because they are more likely to be hand-made pieces, it adds more of a personal and vintage feel to it. In addition, this multicolored crochet design was one of the sweater prints of the 70s. Ask your mom! She probably remembers wearing a couple very similar ones. In fact, I used to have a bunch of my mom’s! Sadly, they have been misplaced… For more of an authentic 70s feel, incorporate real, vintage pieces from your mom’s old wardrobe!

4. Seventies Suede

Between shift dresses and mini skirts, oversized jackets and booties, suede is everywhere! If I were to classify a 70s fall fabric, suede might win title. In 2017, suede has quickly become an extremely popular fabric and trend. It immediately resonates with the 70s, because the texture of the fabric gives off such intense retro vibes. Let’s take these OTK Cole Haan boots (similar) for example. I completely understand that OTK boots are not really recognized during the 70s. However, the suede fabric of them does. By incorporating a current trend with a retro one, you have transited the vintage vibes into a more modern scene.

5. Overalls

If you have been a subscriber of CIC for awhile, you probably would have picked up my love for overalls. Lucky for you and me, overalls have recently made a huge comeback. They have quickly become my go-to, everyday piece, for when I’m running out the door. Not only to they make styling an outfit so incredibly easy, but they instantly take the outfit to the next level. They are kind of like the casual version of a jumpsuit. If your holiday gatherings tend to be more casual, overalls are a great piece to rev up an outfit. Maybe try a pair of black overalls (3rd pair in… dying) to make them a little less casual. Furthermore, you could also incorporate a printed pair of overalls, for a more festive feel. Can never go wrong with pinstripes (2nd pair in)!

6. Blazer + Pant Suits

Right around the time of NYFW (beginning of September), pant suits and blazers blew up! Whether you were going for the full monochromatic look with a pant suit, or rocking the mix and match vibes with a blazer, they were everywhere. I don’t think they have plans of stopping either. The 70s were all about the silhouette. From slimming the figure in a-line or bell pieces, to adding structure with shoulder pads, transforming the body was definitely common during the 70s. Because menswear was a prominent trend this year, pant suits and blazers fit right into the category. Plus, they never go out of style. I highly suggest investing in blazers and pant suits, because you will have them forever! Trust me!

7. Corduroy

After perfecting the silhouette, fabric were the next runner up for most popular trends in the 70s. When it comes to fabrics, it’s all about the texture. To really give off those 70s vibes, incorporating fabric with visible texture is an easy tactic. Suede is one example, but corduroy is on the rise to fame. Even though corduroy is a very tough and thick fabric to work with, it’s thin parallel lines make it super wearable. When I shop for corduroy pieces, I tend to gravitate towards pants and jackets. These pieces instantly add structure, so it gives the corduroy something to work off of. If you are scared to incorporate corduroy, maybe start with an oversized jacket (like this one), or some pants for a more subtle touch (like these). Corduroy always adds such a warm and cozy touch to your holiday wardrobe.

8. Bell Sleeves

Last but certainly not least, the infamous bell sleeves. I almost didn’t include them in this post, but what would the 70s (or 2017 for that matter) be without bell sleeves. These statement sleeves have taken over the sleeve world, and it wouldn’t have been possible without 70s. Bell sleeves were meant to piggyback off of the bell bottoms and flared jeans, that were so popular during this era. If I were to pick the most popular 70s trend for 2017, it would have to be bell sleeves. Am I right? If you aren’t comfortable rocking a wide-legged pant, bell sleeves are the perfect opportunity to still participate in the bell trend. Not only do they amp up any basic top, but they really bring a holiday feel to your look without being obvious.

As I said earlier, times were much simpler in the 70s. With everyone broadcasting their life on social media, I’ve been prone to bordem. Knowing what everyone is doing at every second of the day leaves no mystery (or privacy for that matter). In the 70s, cell phones weren’t even invented and people would actually have to call and talk to someone (of visit in person) to resolve a conflict. Text fights weren’t a thing. In addition, Facebook wasn’t around to notify you of new relationships being official. Plus, traveling was literally a breeze and unbelievably cheap. In fact, I’m starting to think I was born in the wrong generation. Lately, I’ve been uncovering some hippie tendencies. Ben, my boyfriend, and I have even joked about buying hippie van and exploring the world. Who’s with us?!

—————

Needless to say, the 70s were all about innovation, creativity, simplicity, freedom. On what planet would you not want all of that? If you would like to join me on this 70s dedicated tribute, take a stab at incorporating some of these trends in your holiday wardrobe. Between bell silhouettes, textures fabrics, jumpsuits, overalls, crochet, and matching sets, the 70s will continue to live on. Make your holidays a little more authentic, and long live the 70s!
