The Secret Way Petite Girls Can Wear Billowy Pants

Who else has a hard time shopping for billowy pants? There’s always too much fabric going on and it cuts my frame in half. Being 5’3′, the struggle is real with styling oversized pants. When it comes to cargo pants, culottes, parachute pants, harlem pants, flared capris, bell bottoms- I want them all! I realize this is not the case for everyone, because they are very hard to style. Furthermore, they are not everyone’s cup of tea in regards to their style. Today, I’m here to make your life easier! I’m sharing five secrets to mastering the art of styling billowy pants. This one is for all my petite girls!

Until about a month ago, I never knew I was considered “petite”. I usually wear standard sized clothes, but sometimes pants are an issue for me. Although, it is said that if you are under 5’4′, you are technically classified at petite. Some stores even include sizes that are suited for women who are 5’5′. It all just really depends on the store, but 5’4′ is usually the average. Anyways, I picked these balloon pants up in the Free People sale on Haute Look about a month ago. I thought they were so cute and unique, and I was dying to put my styling tactics to the test. While in the process of styling these pants, there were a couple tips that I came up with to help guide myself to the perfect outfit.

1. Crop it like it’s hot.

When styling billowy pants like this, our frame is instantly shortened. Unless you are wearing wide legged pants that is. Usually the object to styling is to elongate our legs. In order to do this sometimes we have to compress our torso length to give the illusion of longer legs. The best way to do this is with a crop top! A bandeau or a tube top would suffice, as well. This Lulu’s strapless top worked perfectly in my favor. It even added to the boho vibes coming from the Free People balloon pants. When in doubt, crop it like it’s hot.

2. Go for the high-waisted pants.

Usually, this detail does just the trick. Nine times out of ten I will purchase high-rise, or high-waisted pants to help give the illusion that I don’t look like a midget. Every little bit helps, am I right?!

3. Add some heels.

As you can see, this tip was not demonstrated. I felt, that flats looked a little more bohemian and curated the look better. Although, heels would quite literally add more height to your legs. Sometimes the solutions are right in front of your nose. Don’t over think it.

4. Tuck in your top.

This tip is the other alternative for a crop top. If the look doesn’t call for a legit crop top, give the illusion that there is one! Either way, both of these tips also help cinch in your waist.

5. Finish off the look with a longer jacket.

By adding different levels to the look, this can really give the appearance of longer legs. For example, let’s say you are wearing high-waisted parachute pants with a tee tucked in. Not only will a jacket or cardigan elevate the look, but it will also distinctly show that the tee is shorter. If we have the illusion of a smaller torso, than the imagery of longer legs follows suit. You feel me?

It’s all about giving the eyes what they want. If you have to trick them in the meantime, so be it! Don’t let the extra fabric and the obscure silhouette scare you from wearing billowy pants. All it takes is a bit of strategy. If you are feeling stuck, take a stab at these tips. They have always helped me and my petite ways. If you have any other tips to help you elongate your petite figure, let me know. Us petite girls gotta stick together!
