As the weather has been getting colder, shearling jackets are becoming more and more popular. With the wool, fur-like lining, it is extremely cozy and warm for the chill air. Where does this trend actually come from, though? I’ll give you hint and reach for the sky!

Let’s start off with a fashion history lesson, shall we? Shearling coats made their fateful appearance in the 1940s on American pilots. They would always take flight in a shearling-lined B-3 sheepskin bomber jacket. With bomber jackets being such a major trend this summer and now fall season, shearling bomber jackets are the transitional step for the winter season. Now, the trend is completely blowing up and is being incorporated into every style of jacket known to man. I’m not complaining, though!

With this aviation history, let’s take the idea and run with it! First off, let’s take the literal path with the aviator style. Ray Ban has been around conveniently, since 1937. Only three years before the shearling aviator bomber jacket. See the correlation? These shades will take your outfit to the next level, literally. So therefore, these two trends are legit, iconic aviation pieces that have flawlessly transitioned into the modern day.

Next, let’s add some holiday cheer to the look. Flannels are an essential piece to everyone’s wardrobe. Really, you can get away with them no matter the season. During the winter months, an actual cotton flannel is perfect to snuggle up with throughout the day. I weirdly enough picked up this dog flannel from Urban Outfitters in the men’s department last year… Sometimes they just have the coolest pieces and an oversized flannel is what the look calls for. The easiest and most subtle way to add some holiday spice is to incorporate a festive color. I obviously went with red! Through the sunglasses, the flannel, and the Frye booties, I already look way more festive.

Before we finish, let’s modernize this just a bit more. Jeans are a timeless piece that will always remain clutch. They are the perfect pair of bottoms that help balance out any look and allow for the rest of the pieces to do the talking. Roll up the bottom of your jeans to help really show your favorite booties. I also layered on my allchokedup choker and some gold studs to add a more feminine feel. Pop on a fun metallic lip for an interesting shift. I’m wearing Colourpop’s ultra metallic lip in Kween and it’s a really pretty rustic, maroon shade. Finally, it’s time to channel your inner Tom Cruise. You are now ready to take flight in style this winter!

It’s so cool how you compare your jacket and aviators to aviation, great idea! I am obsessed with my Ray Bans. This outfit is really cute for a cool day.
