How To Master The Weather’s Mood Swings

How To Master The Weather's Mood Swings

Is anyone else noticing the weather having mood swings lately? From 12°F to 64°F, Cincinnati weather is playing games. One day you are wearing your heavy duty winter coat and the next you can easily get away with a sweater. I am very used to this undecided weather, because up near Kent, OH (where I went to college) the weather is PMSing 24/7. I’d like to say that I have mastered the ways of inconvenient weather and I would like to share a couple tricks up my sleeves.

This whole idea came to me when we went to go shoot this look. I decided to look at the weather report to see how cold it would be and noticed that it would be raining for the next three days… no bueno. We ended up trying to shoot in a slight tornado with some sprinkling rain. The camera was not having it, but I realized we had time to shoot the next morning before the rain came. Finally, things came together. With this whole ordeal, it came to me how familiar this weather was to me. With that, I knew I could be of some assistance. Just call me Yoda.

1. Layer

This is my number one tip. I always layer, regardless of the weather, and it always seems to help me out. You can always take off layers if you are hot, or add layers if you are cold. I went with bulky layers for this shoot, because it was warm enough to do so. If it is below freezing and you need to layer with a coat, stick to thin layers. That sounds completely backwards, but the thin layers will help you layer more than the bulkier layers.

2. Bring A Hat

Living in Kent, OH is equivalent to living in Chicago, in addition to more rain. You are constantly in a wind tunnel and an umbrella just doesn’t cut it. I have tried even the heaviest of duty umbrellas and they flip out within five minutes. My solution; it’s a hat a day. Plain and simple.

3. Wear A Coat/Jacket With A Hood

Now, I know some of you are not so much into hats. Also, I know some of you want even more protection from weather’s mood swings. My next tip is to wear some sort of jacket with a hood. I realized at school, that I did not have too many hooded pieces and I always wished that I had invested more of them. Learn from my mistake and bulk up!

4. Zip-Up/Button-Up Sweaters Are Your Best Friends

This kind of parallels the jacket/coat with a hood. The reason why you should have both, is because sweaters alway add a more fashionable and warmer touch to your outfit. For example, the zip-up sweater I have on couldn’t be more perfect. I layered this Anthropologie sweater over another sweater for an extra layer of warmth and cuteness. Plus, Anthropologie always has the cutest sweaters, am I right?

5. Wear Shoes With Traction

This is CRUCIAL for areas where there is lots of ice! I again learned at school that unless I was wearing boots with traction, I would be skating to class… which I have done. I don’t suggest it though, because it’s makes you late for class… That never starts your day off on the right foot, literally. Plus a friend of mine in PA just broke his ankle slipping on ice! I’m telling you, boots with traction are a must; Invest wisely!

6. Don’t Invest Time In Your Hair

With the weather being crazy, there’s really no point in taking a bunch of time to do your normal hair routine. I can’t tell you how many times I would waste a half hour doing my hair, only for it to be ruined in the first five minutes of me being outside. Like I said before, chalk it up as a hat or hood day. If the weather is cold enough for you, hats tend to make your outfit look even cuter.

These are the tips and tricks I have learned over the past four years on how to master the weather’s mood swings. Take what you will, but I hope this was of some help to you, no matter what climate you’re are dealing with. Hahaha weather can be so bizarre. For us it was 5Ā° one day and then today it was 70Ā° – talk about PMSing weather! I agree completely with your tips. Especially when it comes to good shoes and not worrying about your hair – that’s where hats come in handy and omg yours is so cute! Love how these photos ended up turning out!

Haha, I can totally feel you on photo shoots going down the drain because of weather, but you finally made it! šŸ™‚
These tips were really good for someone living in a cold country as I do, but one thing I especially am going to take with me is the fact: Don’t worry about your hair… I mean it will get messy anyway, so just wear a hat or a hoodie like you said. šŸ™‚
    Thanks for great tips!
