Defying Tourist Stereotypes | 5 Ways to Slay While Traveling

Summer is finally coming into sight! The weather is warming up, flowers are in full bloom, allergies are coming in hot, and I’ve got the travel bug. Not the virus kind of travel bug, but the urge to want to travel everywhere (and right now). Traveling has always been a love of mine, but the Summer really brings out my yearning for adventures. Ya feel me? When traveling to a new destination though, you instantly become a tourist. With the ultimate goal to be comfortable, many tourists have given the rest us a very unfashionable name. Today, I’m sharing five easy ways to look good and feel good, while not being so stereotypically touristy.

These past two weekends, my boyfriend and I went on road trips to Washington D.C. and Nashville. He leaves this weekend to go live as mountain man and to hike the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), so we wanted to get a bunch of traveling in before he leaves. If you want to follow along with his adventures, check him out on Youtube and Instagram! He’s already got the Appalachian Trail (AT) under his belt, so he’s on to the next one! With our recent road trips, I’ve come to learn that I favor a couple of pieces when being touristy. They tend to make life so much easier, and more comfortable when exploring. At the same time, being fashionable and cute gives me a sense of calmness. Is that weird? With the combination of comfort and style, you can take on any adventure that comes your way. All the while defying tourist stereotypes. You’re doing a favor to the traveling community, trust me.

Rompers

Rompers in the Summer are a staple in general. When traveling, they become a necessity. Not only do they save space in your luggage, but they make your styling so much easier. That way, you can cut down time getting ready and spend more time exploring! In particular, I’m really loving this cut out trend in rompers. It’s like rocking a crop top and shorts, without having to choose two pieces. It literally cuts your work in half! Plus, this romper from Zara is especially flattering. The cut out is right above your belly button, so it sucks in any tummy insecurities. It even aids to my current members of the IBTC (Itty Bitty Titty Committee). The twisted knot detail helps you out a bit, to look even more proportionate.

Straw Hat

Not only are these bad boys on trend and perfect for the Summer, but they shield you from the sun as well. If you are looking to get a really good hat, most of them can have a pretty hefty price tag. You are in luck, though! I found this one at Old Navy, along with a bunch of other cute, Summer pieces. If you didn’t catch my last post of me obsessing over them this season, you can check it out here. I even have a  G I V E A W A Y  going on over there, so definitely check it out. You go Old Navy!

Comfy Sandals

If you follow me on Instagram, you know that I’ve been raving about these sandals. If you aren’t, I post daily on current sales, style tips, travel inspiration, makeup trends, and more. Let’s be friends! Anyways, nothing is worse than walking countless miles in uncomfortable shoes. Cue these Ecco sandals. Ecco is usually known for their comfort, but this pair is also on trend with the metallic finishing (in rose gold of course). Because of the color, they go with practically everything. This will leave so much more room in your suitcase, because you will only need this one pair to adventure in.

Fringe Backpack

We all need to bag to hold our stuff, am I right? I vote for a backpack, because it’s convenient and out of your way when exploring. A fringe backpack is ideal, but not mandatory. I’m basically initiating the fringe trend to counteract the boring canvas backpacks. I also just got this super cute, Zara, crochet backpack that works, but it’s a tad small. They also have this adorable, tropical print backpack. Although, this Rebecca Minkoff bag is the perfect size. It allows you to hold a bunch of stuff, but restricts you from holding too much. Plus, who doesn’t love fringe?

Timeless Shades

It should be a rule that everyone must own a pair of Ray Bans. I’m dead serious. These shades will never go out of style. Not only are the Clubmasters the retro, classic style, but they go with every single outfit. By wearing these shades alone, I feel 100% more hip. Plus, everyone needs shades as a tourist. Gotta protect your eyes from those UV rays! Regardless, a classic and timeless pair of sunnies are a must have for any adventure. I’m just biased and think that they should be Ray Bans…

With the urge to travel overtaking the world, I feel that these five pieces will help eliminate the typical tourist stereotype. In addition, they help keep you comfortable and fashion-forward. Basically you are ready for Insta pictures at any moment. Because that’s what life is all about! I can’t wait for my next adventure and I hope these pieces will help you in yours. What destination are you off to next? Start planning now, because Memorial Day Weekend is coming up next. Happy Friday, everyone!

I have the worst case of wanderlust. My husband and I want to travel EVERYWHERE. these tips are bomb. I love the fringe backpack (although that depends on where you’re at — it could prime real estate for pick pocketers ) and the hat. I’m obsessed.

I swear, no matter where I go, the primary pieces I’m packing are rompers and dresses. They’re just so darn EASY haha! I prefer them to pants and tops, although those can be fun to mix and match. But rompers are definitely the way to go because they make life simpler – and this one looks like a matching set which is even cuter! Some great tips here, girlfriend! Wish your BF luck for me! That trail sounds like quite the adventure!

I agree, no matter where I travel my goal is not to look like a tourist, rather blend in as a foreigner who lives in that particular city (because let’s be honest, it’s kind of hard for a somewhat blonde white guy to blend in as a native in Asia or Africa). Dressing is a huge part of all that of course and your tips are great for a comfy, yet sophisticated TRAVELER (not touristy) look! šŸ™‚

I am with you with these tips but I need to look for the perfect comfy sandals and fringe backpack! I remember seeing these sandals a couple of posts and I need to purchase them ASAP. The metallic tint to them make them super cute and stylish. It’s almost the lamb but comfy šŸ˜‰
    I love love this look!
